Is the Chow Chow the right dog for you?

The Chow Chow dog is a beautiful dog that is protective of their owners and can show a bit of a stubborn streak. The Chow Chow’s thick coat can allow them to stand very cold weather. They are small dogs so can get along just fine in an apartment, as long as you take frequent walks or a fenced area where they can exercise. Chow Chow’s can tend to attach themselves to one owner and they do require a firm hand when caring for them.

Are There Any Special Health Considerations?

The short answer is yes, however you’re going to get this with most every breed you encounter. Most dog breeds have certain inherited health problems and the Chow Chow is no exception. The key is knowing about the health issues and deciding if they fit well with you.

The first possible problem you may encounter is Entropion. This is a hereditary disorder where the eyelid, usually lower one, rolls inward and irritates the cornea causing visual problems. If your dog does have this condition, surgery can correct it however it may disqualify your dog from shows.

Another possible condition is canine hip dysplasia. This is genetic based issue where looseness in the hip joint that can lead to arthritis pain or, in extreme cases, leave them lame. Also minor issues like ingrown eye lashes and hot skin spots can be found in Chow Chow’s.

Please keep in mind that this is a general list and dogs of all kinds can experience a wide range of health issues. Your veterinarian should be contacted for a comprehensive list.

Good With Other Pets?

A socialized Chow, that meets the other pet at an early age, should be just fine and happy with other pets.

How Often Will I Need to See the Veterinarian?

You should take your Chow puppy to the veterinarian a few times in the first year to receive shots, boosters and a general checkup. As an adult dog a yearly visit for shots and a general checkup. As your dog ages (about six years and older) you should increase your visits to twice a year for checkups and shots.
