Compare The Chow Chow to Other Breeds
Adopting or getting a new dog is an amazing thing and should be done with great care. There are many things to consider when trying to find the perfect breed for you or your family. In this guide we’re going to compare popular and similar breeds to the Chow Chow.
Chow Chow
The Chow Chow is a Chinese breed that was breed to guard temples in anchient China. Their is Cantonese for "food"... strange I know. We currently think they originated from cross breeding Mastiff-like dogs and the primitive spitz breed.
The Chow Chow is known for their lion-like coat/mane and the black tongues. They are midsized dog that are around 18 and 22 inches tall and weigh in at about 45 and 75 pounds. They have thick and course coats of fur with they come in cream, red, fawn, black, and blue colors.
They are best for single households or families with older kids. It’s best to have no other pets however if you get your Chow Chow at an early age you should be okay. Health wise you should watch for hip dysplasia and entropion (eyelids causing irritations to the dogs cornea).
Boston Terrier
Boston Terrier’s were breed in America by breeding the White English Terrier and the French Bulldog. This breed originally developed as a fighting dog, however, this breed is not aggressive towards people. These are very small dogs with a height of around 10 to 16 inches and weights in around 11 to 24 pounds.
They have short and smooth coats that are almost silky. You can find this dog with a black coat with white markings or brindle (whitish to grey) with white markings. Health wise you should watch for with this breed are cataracts, breathing problems, and whelping (birth problems).
Mastiff
The Mastiff breed is a large working dog from Great Britain. This dog is still used as a watch or guard dog but you can also see them as hunting dogs or family pets.
This large breed can be intimidating however it is a loyal and gentle dog. Don’t be fooled my its size. These dogs are even great around children. As gentle as they are however they can be aggressive toward strangers so keep that in mind. We recommend early human and animal socialization in addition to obedience training.
Dachshund
The Dachshund, affectionately called the Weiner Dog, Teckel, or Zwergteckel, is of German origin that was breed to hunt badgers. The long low body allowed them to burrow for badgers and to run through tunnels to bring out the badgers and other problem pests. Today you’ll see them as a family dog and show dog with very high energy.
There are several types of Dachshund dogs. You can also find small versions of this dog.
They’re about 8 inches tall and weigh in about 16 to 32 pounds. The small version is about 6 inches tall and about 11 pounds. You’ll also find three coat variations within this breed. The Smooth-Haired Dachshund, the Long-Haired Dachshund, and the Wire-Haired Dachshund.
Welsh Springer Spaniel
The Welsh Springer Spaniel is a sporting dog that was originally breed in Wales. They’re a mid sized breed that is about 18 and 19 inches tall and weighs in around 35 and 45 pounds. Their coat is smooth and silky that’s red and white. You’ll also find freckling on the muzzle sometimes. Like other spaniels they are friendly, active, and generally loving. They make a great family dog.
French Bulldog
The French Bulldog, also referred to as the Bouledogue Francais, is either a French or a Spanish breed. They are a small dog that only stands about 12 inches tall and it weighs between 22 and 28 pounds. They have short smooth coats that come in fawn, brindle or pied colors.
To care for this breed you will need to rub down their coats with a rough cloth on a daily basis to keep it shiny and clean. Their teeth need to be cleaned regularly and their toenails will need to be trimmed as needed. This little dog doesn’t need a lot of exercise. You should be able to keep them healthy by playing chase games and fetch in the park, inside, or in your yard.
